The efforts of the United Nations against racial, religious, and
national hatred during the 1960s culminated in the International
Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination
(ICERD), made effective in 1969. ICERD calls on governments around
the world to educate their citizenry against intolerance and repeal
discriminatory laws. It is through this call that the Convention
delineates specific measures to eliminate all forms of
discrimination. Despite ICERD's landmark nature, it has yet to be
recognized by all countries in the world.
